Sweden wasn’t the only contender – but it was the clear winner. After evaluating multiple European locations, we chose Sweden because it delivers on every front that matters to molecular horticulture at scale: energy, regulation, innovation, infrastructure, and talent. This is exactly why Sweden stood out. With around 83% of its electricity generated from renewable sources, it’s not only one of the world’s greenest energy markets – it’s also one of the most reliable and cost-efficient in Europe.
But we went a step further. One of the decisive factors in selecting our specific location within Sweden was its proximity to a new 500 Mw hydroelectric facility scheduled for commissioning in 2027.
When we compared Sweden’s energy pricing to that of the UK, we found the UK to be up to five times more expensive per kilowatt-hour. That’s not just a sustainability win – it’s an economic one.

Progressive Regulatory Environment

Sweden takes a pragmatic, science-led approach to plant-based biotechnology. While aligned with EU frameworks, it has consistently led the charge in modernising how emerging technologies are regulated – especially in areas like transient expression systems, precision biology, and plant-based bio-manufacturing.
Crucially, Swedish regulators understand the distinction between open-environment interventions and highly controlled, precision-based platforms like ours. That clarity creates a path for innovation that is regulated without being strangled – a balance many countries still struggle to achieve. While it may sound counterintuitive to claim that Sweden’s chilly winters – with average January temperatures around -11°C – are an operational benefit, the reality is: they are.
Yes, we’re running a power-intensive indoor growing operation, and yes, climate control is central to the business model. But thanks to state-of-the-art insulation, passive thermal design, and a highly efficient energy system, the internal environment of the facility remains tightly controlled year-round – without battling massive seasonal energy swings.
But the real climatic upside? Biosecurity.
Even with multiple layers of contamination prevention – including airlocks, HEPA filters, gowning protocols, and positive-pressure clean zones – every biotech facility faces one unyielding truth: the outside world wants in. And with it come pests, fungi, airborne spores, and microbial hitchhikers.
